ZOE LANDAU KONSON

Artist statement

Fascinated by familiar narrative and cultural memory, I make sculpture that is both commemorative and revealing. I’m interested in exploring and documenting a recurring set of themes and their potential effect; absence and desire, oppression and betrayal, loss and legacy, identity, and shadowed voices from the past. Often drawing from the refugee background of my family, my work plays with the uncertainty and possibilities within each of us and the way we express that to the outside world.

My sculptures are crocheted, stitched or woven and I’m currently creating a body of work using hair, mixed media and architectural structures. Both hair and architecture seem perfect metaphors for the themes that are central to my work, as well as embodying a sense of time and history. My method of construction consists of making hundreds of multiples of similar shape and then uniting them in a final assemblage. Teeming with a mass of forms, both tactile and tempting; they also conceal a darker side. It is this contradiction that I find so compelling and drives me to keep challenging our perceptions through the use and combination of unconventional form and media.
