Artist Statement

For many years I have made narrative figure paintings. More recently I have found that I am drawn to make work concentrating on subjects that, previously, appeared as background details in my paintings. Often these are elemental and both micro- and macro-cosmic.  They include the sun and moon, fire and water, as well as tiny plants.

Currently I have returned to my most enduring interest in water to study its qualities of fluidity. Water cannot be controlled.  It is very intense and always moving.  I look for ways to still it in order to depict the movement in the static medium of painting, using equivalents such as the folds and stratification of rocks.  I choose to paint with egg tempera, which is both a fluid as well as a deliberate medium and has a particular intensity of light and richness of tone, and with which I aim to translate my observations into graphic language.
